Nags Head Woods
Explore the islands natural areas, The Nature Conservancy offer a variety of summer trips and educational
programs in the forest. Summer adventures include kayak trips, bike-hikes, geology hikes, early morning
migratory bird walks and cultural history walks.
Jockey's Ridge State Park
The tallest active sand dune in the eastern United States (110-140 ft.). The park comprises 484 acres with a park
museum, picnic area, 1.5-mile nature trail, and a boardwalk trail accessible to the handicapped. This is the third
most popular park in the state.
Oregon Inlet Fishing Center
Inshore, offshore, and head boat fishing, 5 small boat ramps, grocery, camping and bait, taxidermy and

Inlet Bridge.
Nags Head Pier

Kill Devil Hills
Wright Brothers Memorial
Site of the first powered flight. Visitor center with exhibits and lectures of the Wright Brothers. Reproduction of
the 1903 Wright Flyer and 1903 Wright Glider, campsite living quarters, and the flight grounds. Tours and
lectures every hour. Open 9 AM-5 PM daily, and 9 AM-6 PM during summer, closed Christmas Day. Admission
$4 per car, or $2 per person.

Roanoke Island
Elizabethan Gardens
A 16th-century style gardens created as a memorial to the ill-fated Lost Colony by the Garden Club of North
Carolina. Ornamental gardens and statuary, wildflowers and shrubs. Open daily 9 AM-5 PM, June-Labor Day, 9
AM-8 PM. Admission Charged. Located adjacent to the Lost Colony and Fort Raleigh National Historic Site.
Fort Raleigh
Home of the first English settlement in the New World, from 1584-1590. Tour includes a museum focusing on the
early colonization and a short informative film which provides an excellent background to the colonists' struggle.
Also located on the site is Paul Green's The Lost Colony, and Thomas Harriot Nature Trail which winds its way
through the Fort Raleigh site. Open 9 AM-5 PM daily except Christmas Day. Free Admission.
The Lost Colony
The outdoor drama of Sir Walter Raleigh's Roanoke colony and their disappearance in 1587. Presented nightly
except Sat. mid-June through late August at 8:30 in Waterside Theater (beside Fort Raleigh and Elizabethan
Gardens). Admission charged. Reservations can be made by calling 252-473-3314 or 800-488-5012.
North Carolina Aquarium
Features fish and marine life native to North Carolina. Touch tank, large shark gallery, shoreline board walk,

Elizabeth II
A 69 foot square rigged sailing vessel representative of those which transported Sir Walter Raleigh's colonists.
Includes visitor center/gift shop, exhibits, and a nice air conditioned auditorium that can lull you into a nice nap,
undistracted by the low-budget audio visual presentation. After your snooze, enjoy the tour of the ship and its
